Grove

Edwin Wiley Grove  1850-1927

Born in Whiteville, Tennessee in 1850, E. W. Grove was proprietary drug manufacturer and creator of "Grove's Tasteless Chill Tonic." Grove became a prominent developer in Asheville beginning with construction of the Grove Park Inn from 1912-13 and the surrounding north Asheville neighborhood called Grove Park. He also built the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville.

In 1913, the Raoul family sought to sell Albemarle Park to E. W. Grove who, according to The Family of Raoul “was spending money like water.” Grove wasn’t interested at that time; though three years later, in 1916, he did buy all of the land east of Sunset Drive in Albemarle Park, about seven acres to add to his other holdings in the area.

The Albemarle Park~Manor Grounds Association, Inc. is a 501(c)(3), federally designated, tax-exempt, nonprofit organization.
